“Harlem Nocturne” is a very powerful piece for me on many levels. It puts me in touch with my African-American heritage. When my Father was a DJ in Denver, CO, in the 1960s, this was his theme song. Whenever I heard this music coming from my mother’s transistor radio, I knew the next thing I would hear was my Dad’s voice. My Father lived a fascinating life, and I’m in the process of writing a book about him. During my interviews with him for the book, I learned that he always wanted to be a musician — a pianist! However, growing up as the grandson of a slave in rural Mississippi, he didn’t have the opportunity to learn music. The only thing my Dad could play on the piano was a little “lick” from the song “Blues in the Night.” In my arrangement of this iconic jazz composition, I decided to combine both of these pieces as a tribute to my Father.
