My Father lived his life with an optimism and positive energy that touched everyone he came in contact with. I know that one day I’ll write a song about that too. But this piece is a song about my experience of him dying — of being with him in the hospital during his last days — his last hours. The melody in this song reflects the constant mechanical sounds of the hospital. The oxygen machine, the IV pump, the blood pressure machine and the nurse call button. Together, all those sounds generated an endless rhythm that was the background for all our final conversations, for the quiet moments, the spiritual explorations, the talk of family, the memories of his youth — and mine. This song is about all of that — and maybe my somewhat selfish wish that his life would go on just a little bit longer.
