The Winterreigen Suite, Op. 13, was composed in 1905 by Hungarian composer Erno Von Dohnányi. The title “Winterreigen" was taken from a poem by Viktor Heindl, in which the poet laments the wintry and sad memories of nostalgic times past. Dohnányi wrote this cycle of ten Bagatelles as a farewell to dear friends. “Postludium” is the final piece in the cycle. I was scheduled to play this composition for my college senior recital, but circumstances prevented my performance. In addition to my emotional attachment to the melody, it tends to bring me face to face with my shadow self. Each time I taught a student this technically difficult piece, I was haunted by the fact that I had never really mastered it. Finally, I decided it was time to conquer my fear of this piece, say farewell to some unfinished business, and record it for this album.
